A class of their own: why product type approval means safer maritime construction
Efficiency, security and, most importantly, safety, are paramount when it comes to maritime construction. Poor design, construction and operation can result in high operating costs, increased fuel consumption and a shorter operating life for machinery. At the same time, insufficient safety management can lead to losses of cargo, reputation and even life.
The critical imperative of strict safety and security standards has made maritime classification organisations absolutely essential. These bodies independently verify that vessels and other maritime constructions, along with their structuring and ongoing maintenance, meet the necessary standards. From the blueprints of a vessel right through to each individual aspect of the construction itself, classification societies are tasked with thoroughly inspecting every detail of a product’s development. This system provides reassurance that all the elements of a construction remain safe, compliant and environmentally friendly throughout the product’s entire operating life cycle.
As you can imagine, in the complex environment of today’s maritime industry, these societies have become immeasurably important. Now, two centuries after they were first introduced, classification societies are a vital factor in all maritime operations, and number over 50. Of these, 12 make up the membership of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).
Every classification society provides a strict procedure to gain approval for a product design, which is known as ‘type approval’. These procedures include the appraisal of plans and drawings, prototype test performances, and an assessment of whether the design meets classification standards and/or regional administrative requirements. If a design receives type approval, then all products made to that identical design carry that approval by default, without the need for further individual assessment.
All manner of products can receive type approval, but it is particularly suitable for products of a standard design that can be manufactured routinely, for example, diesel engines, flexible hoses, electric cables, transformers, or safety valves for cargo tanks.
At Jebsen & Jessen Singapore Pte Ltd (Cables International), safety is our number one priority, so we consider it our duty to partner with manufacturers who supply products with accredited type approval. This way, our customers know that when they work with us, we can support them in meeting the most up-to-date international standards for marine and offshore construction.
