Cables International appointed cable supplier for Sofia Wind Farm’s offshore converter platform
Sofia is one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world, located on Dogger Bank, 195 km off the northeast coastline of UK in the central North Sea. Sofia covers an area of 593 square kilometers, and the total amount of power likely to be generated would be enough to potentially provide almost 1.2 million average UK homes with their annual electricity needs.
Besides being one of the largest, Sofia is also one of the farthest wind farms from shore with great challenges. These challenges entail the great distance from the mainland, limited infrastructure and communications, environmental concerns, and extreme temperatures. For this, they need harsh environment offshore cables with DNV-GL classification society approval designed to withstand the extreme conditions of the North Sea.
As the world’s leading stockist and supplier of specialty cables for the oil and energy sectors, Cables International, a member of diversified industrial conglomerate Jebsen & Jessen Group, is well equipped to provide the needed solutions to meet the requirements.
Through Singapore’s Sembcorp Marine, the contracted supplier of high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system for Sofia, Cables International has been awarded a cables supply contract for Sofia’s offshore converter platform.
The HVDC transmission system represents Sofia’s second-largest contract and will include the design, manufacture, installation, commissioning and maintenance of the offshore converter platform and the onshore converter station, including all ancillary equipment.
While Sembcorp Marine is the appointed Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor building the offshore converter platform, Cables International is the cable supplier providing connectivity to all Sofia offshore converter platform equipment.
